Adding strategic value in an Annual Report is much more of a challenge for FTSE250 companies than it is for FTSE100 companies. Experience indicates that the larger capitalised company is often better able to allocate the resources required to construct an effective narrative to articulate its strategic thinking, strategic management and strategic capability effectively to the widest group of stakeholders.

Premier Farnell is a mid-cap FTSE250 with a capitalisation of just over £1 billion. This makes its singular achievement of adding more strategic value than any other FTSE250 company in this reporting cycle that much more commendable.

The judges commented that Premier Farnell excites with the evident depth of its strategic thinking and with compelling evidence of its capacity for good strategic management. Even though there are one or two limitations, these were not enough to wrest the top slot from PFL this year.
